Serve Our World

Diakonia is Caring and Service

Diakonia is like our English word deacon, which describes a helper or someone in the ministry of service for others. Diakonia composes the largest portion of our New Testament, the Epistles: letters that were written to other congregations offering care, hospitality, correction, connection, grace and love. They are letters written to nurture and build up communities of believers; letters to encourage and to say “you are cared for.”

Diakonia is revealed in the love and grace of the Samaritan who sees an injured traveller from Jerusalem and is moved with compassion to bandage his wounds, and care for his wellbeing (Luke 10:25-37).

Diakonia is a reflection of disciples like Martha or Stephen, the first martyr, who simply can’t sit still, they see a need and they lend a hand (Luke 10:38-42; Acts 6:1-6).

Diakonia repeats the loving care of Jesus who wraps a towel around his waist and washes his disciples’ feet (John 13:1-17).

Serve Our Community

He has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice,
and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?  —Micah 6:8

Serving our community through social ministry at St. Timothy encompasses a variety of service and outreach ministries, often in partnership with our neighboring community. Throughout the year, St. Timothy participates in serving and supporting a number of local partners In Our Community (listed below). In addition, St. Timothy serves our community by hosting/offering along with our partners, programs and ministries Here at St. Timothy (listed below).  All programs are open to the community.

Helping Hands
Our new “Helping Hands” program is a simple way for members of St. Timothy to offer their practical skills to serve others in our congregation when needs arise. Whether its light plumbing, minor electrical work, painting, snow removal, transportation, small household repairs, etc., many of us have abilities that could be a tremendous blessing to others. Hesed House
St. Timothy has partnered with Hesed House in Aurora 6 times each year for the past 30 years. Our commitment is to provide dinner, lunch and breakfast 6 times each year to the Overnight Emergency shelter. Aside from serving meals, we have provided sheets, blankets and other special requests to assist the shelter. To learn more about Hesed House, go to hesedhouse.org. To get involved, contact our office (office@sttimothylutheran.com).

LSSI Giving Tree
During the Holiday season we partner up with Lutheran Social Services of Illinois and bring joy to children in foster care by purchasing Christmas gifts from their wish lists.

Mill Street Cares
Mill Street Cares helps families in need at Mill Street Elementary school, our neighbor across the street. Our members provide food items to feed children breakfast and lunch (the meals that children normally receive at school when it’s in session) during Christmas break or whenever it is needed.

Prayer Shawls
Can you wrap yarn around a peg, then lift the loop over another peg? If you can do that, then you can be part of the Prayer Shawl Ministry! You can loop, crochet, or knit a shawl in your own home at your own pace. All we ask is that when completed, you drop the shawls off at the church office. Shawls are meant for anyone who is feeling lonely, lost, hurt, fearful, in pain, or dealing with a troubling situation. They are a small token of affection that bring a lot of comfort. Contact Lisa Ruby-Trzeciak for more info (trzweb@gmail.com).

Snow Removal Team
Each winter it takes a dedicated group of volunteers to keep our parking lot and sidewalks clear. Some volunteers help drive the bobcat while others shovel or snow blow the walks. Don’t worry, you won’t do this alone. The volunteers are divided up into teams that take turns to cover each snow event. The work is done on an as-needed basis and is very important to keep everyone safe. If you want to learn to drive the bobcat we will teach you. And we will GLADLY welcome your help if all you want to do is make certain the sidewalks are clear for the Preschool, for the evening activities, and for the Mill Street School students. Please contact either the church office or John Ohaver (johaver.j3p@gmail.com).
