Psalm 23

The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures; he leads me beside still waters; he restores my soul. He leads me in right paths for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I fear no evil; for you are with me; your rod and your staff—they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord my whole life long.

By our side

We were sitting out in the narthex at church, five of our eighth-grade confirmation students, and two of our small group leaders, Pr. Dan and Helen Maxon. We sank into those comfy cushions by the entrance to the office, exhausted after a long day of school and work. But our hands held a bit of new life. We held a short reading from Holy Scripture, Psalm 23.

Here’s what our confirmands said about this well-loved passage:

  • Psalm 23 talks about how God will always be there for us. He is there wherever we go, protecting us. He brings out the best in us, like goodness and mercy.
  • God is always with us and will make sure we are taken care of and protected.
  • The passage means that whatever happens the Lord is always there. Through it all, God will lead you in the right paths.
  • No matter what, God is there for you. When you are afraid, turn to him, for God will save, help or forgive you. While we don’t deserve it, he has given us everything.
  • We are blessed to know that the Lord God is enough. He’s everything we need.

Prayer: Thank you, Lord, for always being by my side, even in the darkest times, staying by our side our whole life, leading us on the right path and helping us to be the best we can be.

To ponder: Imagine how you experience God’s presence in your life each and every day.
