Adult Education & Small Groups

Adult Education & Small Groups
Spiritual life at St. Timothy for adults is provided through and small groups throughout the week and on Sunday in the form of guest speakers, forums, presentations, prayer and discussion groups and of course, Bible studies. Various presentations and retreats are offered for both men and women during the year.
Participants and Leaders are always needed to keep growing our Faith Development team.
If you have an idea for a venue and or would like to lead a particular study or Spiritual Life event, please contact our Spiritual Life Chair
Here are some current opportunities where you can grow your faith:
WOMEN’S BIBLE STUDY
Women’s Morning Bible study uses books, videos, or magazine articles, which focus on a variety of topics that resonate with women of all ages. Participants use their own Bibles in every study, no matter what the topic may be. All women are invited to participate when they can. Weekly attendance is not required. This is a fun group that enjoys talking about their faith and praying together. Facilitated by Vicki Oftedal.
Weekly on Wednesdays, 9:30am – 11am, starting September 13
THE PARABLES OF JESUS
Parables are some of the most well-known stories from the Bible. Many of us have heard Jesus telling us about sons, servants and Samaritans for as long as we can remember, and we take comfort in our familiarity with them. The goal of this study is to build on our shared understanding of Jesus’ parables. Together, we will explore parables relative to their position in the Bible, clarify what the allegories represent, wrestle with multiple meanings and look for ways to apply the parables to our lives in 2023.
Facilitated by Greg Kerfoot.
Tuesdays, 10:00am – 11:15am OR Tuesdays, 6:30pm – 7:45pm for 4 Weeks: September 19 – October 10
“THE CHOSEN” MOVIE & DISCUSSION
“The Chosen” is a highly popular movie series, which tells the story of Jesus and his disciples. It brings the message of the gospel to life, especially the disciples’ response to Jesus. Facilitated by Kathy Lukavsky and Jerry Betz.
Sundays, 10:45am – Noon for 8 Weeks: September 24 – November 12
BOOK DISCUSSION OF “DANCING IN THE DARKNESS, SPIRITUAL LESSONS FOR THRIVING IN TURBULENT TIMES” BY THE REV. DR. OTIS MOSS III
This book will serve as an inspiring guide to spiritual resilience in the face of our turbulent times. Rev. Otis Moss III is the senior pastor of Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, and one of our country’s most renowned religious and civil rights leaders. He has spoken and preached at many Lutheran and ecumenical gatherings. The four weeks together are intended to be a discussion group of tuning into God’s spiritual direction to direct our choices while working for justice. The author references Martin Luther King Jr.’s statements in the 1960s about how America then was in a time of division and anxiety. Today we face the same political and spiritual challenges. Facilitated by Karen Garrett.
Thursdays, 10:00am – 11:30am for 4 Weeks: September 21 – October 12
WOMEN’S EVENING BIBLE STUDY
This Bible study will use the book, “Jesus Calling: Receiving Christ’s Hope” by Sarah Young. It is the third in an 8-book study series and is available for purchase online at Amazon and ChurchSource. The study explores the promises God makes to us in His word about finding our shelter, security, and peace in His love. The series includes “selected passages of Scripture for reflection, Bible Study questions, and additional questions and activities” that can be read and reflected upon during the week. Lisa looks forward to meeting with others seeking to study God’s word and reflect, share insights and grow closer to Jesus.
Facilitated by Lisa Kurtides.
Tuesdays, 6:00pm – 7:30pm for 8 Weeks: October 10 – December 5
BIBLE STUDY DISCUSSION ON SELECTED GEMS FROM THE BIBLE
Come on Sundays or Wednesdays to reflect with Pastor Saïd on selected Bible passages in the Old and New Testament, which teach us about God and God’s intentions for humanity.
Facilitated by Pr. Saïd.
Sundays, 8:00am, starting October 1, OR Wednesdays at 4:00pm, starting October 4
FACING LIFE TRANSITIONS TOGETHER
We often hear people say “change is the only constant in life”. Some changes are anticipated and others are utterly unexpected. Some of us may embrace change while many of us tend to resist the discomfort associated with change. Join us as we discuss how life’s changes and transitions can lead to transformation, offer support and care for one another, and grow in our ability to approach change with curiosity rather than worry. Facilitated by Susie Merrihew.
Weekly on Tuesdays, 2:00pm, starting September 26
MEN’S BIBLE STUDY
This weekly Bible study offers wide ranging discussions centered around various bible topics and passages. Sometimes a book of the bible is explored chapter by chapter for many weeks, and at other times an individual topic or theme is discussed for one meeting. The discussions offer flexibility for those who may not be able to attend every week. Usually topics are focused to fit the one-hour time slot. Come when you can. A continental breakfast of pastries is often included. Attendees, however, bring their own favorite coffee. Facilitated by Bruce Everhart and John Ohaver.
Weekly on Saturdays, 8:00am – 9:00am starting September 16
